Choosing well: a catalogue, a seller, an agent

Three separate judgement calls sit underneath every order: is this catalogue worth trusting, is this particular seller worth buying from, and is this agent worth routing your money through. None of the three substitutes for the others.

Signs a Spreadsheet catalogue is still being kept up

Choosing a trustworthy Spreadsheet catalogue, this one included, comes down to whether it is checked against the live source rather than copied once and abandoned. Concrete signs worth looking for on any catalogue, not just this one: does it date its facts and cite the specific help article or announcement behind each one; does it update when the underlying agent changes a policy, a fee or a line; does it disclose plainly that it is independent rather than implying it is the agent's own site; and does it avoid inventing numbers, reviews or stock counts it cannot actually verify. This site dates every figure, links the help-article source where one exists, and states on every page that it is independent of MambaBuy.

Judging a specific seller inside the catalogue

Once inside a listing, a handful of checks catch most problems before an order is placed. Read the full option menu, not just the headline photo; sellers routinely bury the actual price-bearing variant, a minimum order quantity, or an unrelated add-on inside a dropdown that the main photo does not reflect. Check whether the shop has a visible sales history or rating where the platform shows one; Taobao sellers with no track record and 1688 sellers with high minimum order quantities both carry more risk than an established shop. Where MambaBuy's own disclaimer applies a rule, use it: its guidance (help article 6614) suggests favouring Taobao sellers rated three stars or higher with a posted deposit, specifically because low-credit sellers are more likely to cancel or substitute an order after payment.

Finally, cross-reference the Chinese listing text against the English translation where you can. Machine translation smooths over exactly the kind of colour, material and sizing ambiguity covered on the warehouse photos page; the original text is usually more precise than the translated option label.

Scoring an agent on its own paperwork

An agent is worth trusting to the degree its terms are written down and consistent, not to the degree its marketing is polished. Concrete checks: does the agent publish a specific, numbered fee schedule rather than a vague promise of low cost; does it name the company behind the brand and the jurisdiction its terms fall under; does it explain what its quality check does and does not cover, rather than letting "QC photos" imply a full inspection; and does it have a working, monitored contact channel rather than a form that leads nowhere. MambaBuy clears most of these (a named operating entity, a dated fee schedule, a documented QC scope) while falling short on internal consistency, its help centre's three different statements about accepted payment methods being the clearest example on this site; see the costs page for all three.

Multiple, unresolved contradictions inside an agent's own documentation are not automatically disqualifying, since most agents in this category show at least one, but they are a reason to test the specific claim that matters to your order (a payment method, a fee rate, a line's duty treatment) with a small step before committing a large one.

Five things worth confirming first

  1. Open the option menu in full, including any collapsed or secondary dropdowns, before trusting the headline photo and price.
  2. Check the seller's rating or sales history where the platform shows one, and favour sellers with a visible track record for anything above a small, low-risk order.
  3. Confirm the fee schedule for the exact path you plan to use, self-service versus staff-placed, card versus PayPal versus balance, since the difference between them can be a meaningful share of a small order's total.
  4. Run a small test order first if a large one is planned, to confirm the agent's actual charges match its published schedule before committing serious money.
  5. Keep a dated screenshot of the listing, the option menu and the price at the time of ordering, in case a dispute over what was actually offered comes up later.
